Before the late 19th century, the idea of synchronized time across regions barely existed. Life Before Time Zones
For most of human history, time was measured locally. Each town set its clocks based on when the sun was directly overhead, defining that moment as noon. Two cities a few hundred miles apart would have noticeably different clocks, sometimes off by 15 or 20 minutes. For agriculture and local commerce, this was perfectly fine. Travel was slow, and a small clock difference made no practical difference.
The Railroad Problem
The 19th century changed everything. Railroads connected distant cities in hours rather than days, and timetables suddenly mattered. Each station kept its own local time. A train pulling out of one town might find the clock at the next station several minutes off. By 1850, the United States alone had hundreds of slightly different local times. Mistimed trains caused crashes, missed connections, and chaos in scheduling.
The railroad industry began organizing its own standardized "railway time" to keep schedules consistent. In 1883, U.S. and Canadian railroads agreed on four standardized continental zones, almost the same boundaries we still use today.
The Standardization of Time
A year later, in October 1884, delegates from 25 countries gathered in Washington, D.C. for the International Meridian Conference. They agreed on a single prime meridian, dividing the world into 24 hour-long zones. The conference also formalized the concept of a universal day starting at midnight at the prime meridian. The system spread quickly because trade, telegraphs, and steamships all benefited from a shared clock.
GMT Origins
The chosen reference was the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Ships had been using Greenwich as a longitude reference for nearly a century, and most navigation charts already pointed there. Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, became the world's first universal time. Over the following decades, every country tied its civil time to a specific offset from GMT.
