London is 5 hours ahead of New York.
This gap can shift by an hour around daylight saving changes (New York observes DST) and (London observes DST).
How to use the time difference calculator
A time difference is simply the gap between two places' local clocks at the same moment. Pick City A and City B above, and both live clocks update every second along with the difference. Use "Swap cities" to flip the direction when you would rather read the result the other way around.
Why a time difference can change
Many countries move their clocks for daylight saving time, and they do not all switch on the same date. That means the gap between two cities is not fixed year-round. New York and London are usually 5 hours apart, but for a couple of weeks each spring and autumn they sit 4 hours apart because one has changed clocks and the other has not.
Half-hour and 45-minute offsets
Not every offset is a whole hour. India runs at UTC+5:30, Adelaide at UTC+9:30 or UTC+10:30 in summer, and Nepal at UTC+5:45. Differences involving these places show as fractions of an hour, so a call scheduled "on the hour" in one city may land at half past in the other.
Three quick examples
- New York and London: a 9:00 AM call in New York is 2:00 PM in London during most of the year.
- London and Mumbai: with a 5:30 gap in winter, 11:00 AM in London is 4:30 PM in Mumbai.
- Los Angeles and Sydney: the gap is large enough that a Monday afternoon call in Los Angeles is Tuesday morning in Sydney.
